Paragon and renegade aren’t supposed to be good and evil though. At least not in the first game

The thing is I don’t even see paragon and renegade as right or wrong and I neither does BioWare imo. Often times paragon is just the passive choice and renegade is the stern choice, so the difference really is just the manner in how you do it and not necessarily that it’s right or wrong.

this is the biggest flaw of the entire trilogy, it feels like Paragon Vs Renegade should be idealism Vs pragmatism, but really it's just nice Vs mean. this becomes more evident in the 2nd and 3rd games too but I won't spoil obviously

Having a morality system as a strict up or down really is not a good showing of morality. This includes red deads. Its morality system isn’t innovative or good.

that example from dragon age isnt really the best one cause you could just go to the circle of magi and nobody would die. a better example would probably have been anders/justice from da2

I think OP is the one leaning too heavily on the idea of ‘right and wrong’. Of course, it is essentially this for most players - but if you’re looking to be more nuanced - it’s not right and wrong it’s authoritarian and empathetic choices. Not right and wrong. You save the galaxy either way…

Say what you want about the rest of the game but Alpha Protocol really nailed this. “There are no right or wrong choices, only different results”

Morality systems were dumb and I’m glad games have largely done away with them. Fallout had that problem where a lot of morally grey quests were spoiled by that stupid karma system. Good thing they replaced that with companion reputations.

Tbf its buns like friendship in rivalry in dragon age it just doesnt work
I mean in 2 and 3 of the trilogy the choices are less right and wrong

Biggest problem is that once people figure out what the paragon /renegade is and how it works. they usually end up just blindly always picking one option regardless if it’s what they’d want to chose in that moment simply cause they gotta get those “points”. Their shepherds en ho very on dimensional because of it

non are wrong, one is a passive choose and the other is aggressive. I like the factory you can play the game 3x and different options

as a person who insists on weighing each choice based on who Sheppard is and what she believes with the background I've given her and the choices she's had to make, same bro.

😅 uh, well. Have you tried playing it like it was just you in these situations. Like the choices, to me, don't feel like binary good or bad because they aren't usually presented that way. yes there are two ends of a spectrum but the game doesn't punish you or gift you either way. so when I hear people having such an issue with it I'm usually pretty genuinely confused because where is the issue?

It's a reputation system as much as it is a morality system, are you seen as a Paragon or seen as a Renegade. So while you know the nuances of the moral choice here people deciding how they view you don't necessarily know the details.
Like the honor system in Red Dead, it can be viewed as morality but it's also how you are perceived by the people in the game world. And the court of public opinion is often extremely black and white even when the choices being made fall into shades of gray.

The game is 19 years old dude. It’s was a fun attempt to introduce replay-ability and some, albeit limited, sense of decisions of consequences for players.

I just I’m just here to disagree on that. They could both be the right choice. Punishing a crime that something COULD commit is wrong.

you misinterpret the system. it's not so much morality. Shep is always the hero. it's more to do with whether Shep follows the rules soldiers follow or not and whether Shep acts as a traditional hero or an anti hero in a few cases. e.g. in this case the laws around war are clear. the rachni queen is a non combatant, she is a prisoner and even if she wasnt a prisoner and was a combatant she I clearly surrendering. ditto, to kill her would be a war crime. now you can argue it's for the greater good morally but Shep actively has to break the rules of engagement in order to do what they deem to be the morally correct choice of keeping the galaxy safe. this isn't a star wars RPG where you can fall to the dark side. Shep is a character with pre determined traits that she has no matter the player choice and one is that she is never actually evil.

It's not "evil vs good", it's "morally corrupt vs morally righteous". Both serve the side of good, it's just that one isn't willing to compromise their morals to achieve their goals, and the other one has pessimistic, compromised, harsh views and is willing to bend their own allegiance to good to achieve his goals. Just like the rachni example - paragon thinks genocide is bad and wrong, and the creatures deserve a chance for redemption, while renegade lacks trust and forgiveness, casting down judgement based on the past and condems an entire race to extinction based on fears and doubts

I think that morality systems should be not non-binary instead merge with reputational systems based on how characters and people in your party view your actions. That will make a lot of things more injured staying when it comes to choices.
