It's kind of like "Uncle Sam"/America has this image as being an upright and moral guy who takes his nephew (white people) fishing and gives him silver dollars and offers life advice. Meanwhile, behind closed doors he's been abusing his niece (Black people) since forever but when she tells the rest of the family, a huge chunk of them call her a liar and a troublemaker and go out of their way to make life hard for her and any members of the family who stand up for her. A lot of Americans (including but not limited to white people, unfortunately) would rather let the truth-telling niece continue to suffer than admit their beloved uncle is abusive. It's not right and denying the truth is a continuation of the abuse. There's often a sort of chosen guilelessness b/c they'd rather remain stupid (in the most charitable light - a lot know and embrace it) so they don't have to feel guilt.
