Replying to @Renita Joyce Do you think that there could be a difference between the concept of sapiose*uality and neurodivergent cognitive attraction, as I’ve defined it? For me, cognitive attraction is about breaking down systemic expectations about relationships. As a sociologist, I’m fascinated by social structures, and we know that patriarchy, capitalism, and coloniality, as well as neuroarchy (a social structure built on neurotypical norms), shape expectations for our lives and behavior. Relationships are a major component of this. For example, we know that patriarchy sets expectations for heteronormative relationships. Capitalism sets expectations that we aspire for status and upward socioeconomic mobility. Colonialism deeply intersects with both of these, often also encouraging us to pursue relationships based on shared cultural backgrounds. However, we don’t talk very much about how neuroarchy may shape expectations for relationships. For me, cognitive attraction is about breaking down systemic expectations and truly meeting a person for who they are internally within their own mind, in a way that is as removed as possible from the way social structures pigeonhole us into categories as people. I want to deeply understand somebody with whom I share a partnership, but I also want to see, understand and explore the world through them and their perspective and their mind and their interests. I want to deeply understand them and allow them to be seen and loved in a way that is separate from the performativity we are entrained into through social structures. This, to me, separates cognitive attraction from sapiose*uality: it’s not just about attraction, but also the ethos of the relationship. What do you think? Let me know in the comments. #autism #ADHD #MentalHealth #psychology #neurodivergent
