Interesting. When I did my course (a lifetime ago) our in house Director used it to describe shots he’d take to ensure his editor had material they could use on top of the planned shots. Often it would be a wide shot of the whole written scene or a locked off shot of each person in the scene if more than one camera in use. He believed it was the Directors job to do most of what you talking about and why he was insistent that part of a directors training should be editing experience

put your protagonist closer to the audience in frame to show them powerful and important. during the protagonists lowest point (usually the end of the second act) flip that to the antagonist to make the protagonist look small and hopeless before the final triumph of the hero. same works for looking up or looking down at the main character with the camera angle
