WWII Footage// By 1945, many German units facing the U.S. Army were made up of teenagers from the Hitler Youth and members of the Volkssturm—a hastily assembled militia consisting largely of boys, elderly men, and poorly trained civilians. As American forces advanced deeper into Germany, especially in the final weeks of the war, thousands of these young fighters surrendered or were taken prisoner as Nazi defenses crumbled. In the Ruhr Pocket alone, around 317,000 German soldiers were captured. Images and footage like this highlight the human toll of Nazi Germany’s last mobilization: young boys put into uniforms, given weapons, and sent into a war that was already lost.
