It honestly hits different than seeing Charmander, Tepig, Chimchar, or Genger be rejected, because Umbreon is letting Spinel know—through no fault of its own— that he’s failed as a trainer. Unlike Ash’s Greninja and Snivy where it was only mentioned they had rejected their previous trainers, this was the first actual time we see a Pokemon coldly turn their back on their trainer.
