you don't need a db here, this is solved by one hashing algorithm

That’s not “system design” bro. How do you make the short URLs is the design part. Think a few billions of them, shortest as possible, and you need to generate them as up to a few millions per second. The rest is just called HTTP and key-value store.

URL shorteners are a terrible thing for cybersecurity. “Does this shortened URL go somewhere I can trust? Who knows, it’s hidden behind a cnt.ly URL shortener”.

you already failed, because why don't you want 301? you didn't explain that, depending on the product 301 can make sense.

Op didn't answer anything, most of the time this question is about how to shard for infinite user scale

Modern nitpick; 301/302 are incorrect status codes to us as they’re not actually redirect codes… 301 is “this resource is moved” 302 is actually “Found”, correct, modern codes are 307/308

What really sad is I have designed and built similar systems to this 10 years ago and now I just use Claude and give it a spec sheet of what I want and it just does it. I don’t have to even properly think about it. It’s really depressing.

Google has stopped recognizing permanent vs temporary. They treat 302s as 301s so it doesn’t matter
