In the anime they play duel monsters. In real life we play the yugioh trading cards game. Same monsters but 2 different games with different rules. It's like comparing either to dungeon dice monsters. Same monsters, different game.

iirc, it was a sub plot in GX where they tried to make the abilities hidden and had to be researched. Jaden told Cyrus that his road cards had hidden abilities and Cyrus looked flabbergasted that they had powers.
