As someone who is also a former debater and debate coach, I hugely agree. Even with the format I competed in (IPDA) being a lot better than others comparatively in terms of being adversarial and not useful in the real world, I know that formal debate is basically only useful as an education tool. The structure, competition, and deliberate "versus" setup is only good insofar as it all provides guide rails for researching and articulating arguments. In the real world you should not be "debating" if your goal is to change someone's mind.

They are a safespace to change your mind, for the audience. The polarization is largely because people are isolating from ideological opponents and the things they view are unchallenged. If you think they are useless because they aren't perfect then you should defend that view. Not that the participants aren't changing their views on the spot.

I'm betting we don't agree much on issues.. BUT, I just said this same thing on my show. The 'debate culture' we're seeing unfold is not helpful. I don't think it's 'verbal violence,' but it's certainly useless generally.

as another former high school (Ohio champ), I agree 100%. The videos are about pushing cliches and fishing for soundbites. People aren't convinced by debates, they dig in too much. Conversations are what changes minds

Debates should be done in a court-like format. Like a defendant's attorny, a prosecutor, and a judge. Too often in debates people try to squirm around their positions so they can get a win. In a court-like format, the judge would force both sides to bite down on bullets that they're trying to avoid answering, and the judge would also point out inconsistent logic. Debates might not be useful for the 2 debaters trying to win, but it does provide a good medium to force people to have to defend their beliefs with what should be logical reasoning.

The point of those debates is to convince the audience of your views, not your opponent. In theory both sides are giving the best arguments for their side and the viewers can use that to inform their own views. Essentially just eliminating the information gap

Debate is one of the ways we teach politics to children, but because it’s adversarial, it comes off as pretentious. It doesn’t seem like a system worth teaching.
