@admittedlyco: If your “passion project” is performative, your dream school can tell. Admissions officers have seen thousands of them: websites with no depth, nonprofits with no traction, projects built to look impressive rather than be meaningful. It’s not that “passion projects” are inherently bad. It’s that most are built for optics, NOT impact. 👉 Are you building something real… or something that just looks good? #collegeadmissions #extracurriculars #ivyleague #passionproject #collegeprep
can you tell me if my passion project is strong enough for a good college-i'm planning to start an ecobricking initiative in my community where people drop off their bottles and I use them to initiate building projects with them-it encourages people to break their routines of just throwing single-use plastics away and keeps a cleaner community all while building new things for people in need. However, my intended major is neuropsychology and it can connect to ecobricking by encouraging people to change their unhealthy habits but i'm not sure if that connection is strong enough to psychology. I'm really passionate about starting this and have always been passionate about the environment; i became vegetarian for this and got rid of most plastic in my house. Please tell me if this passion project is worth it or if i should switch to another one (or do multiple) as i have not started this project yet! thanks

I want to create something that teaches teens about how your skin is connected with mental health and vice versa. Is this a good idea??

Hi! So I’m a rising senior and since 10th grade I wanted to start a nonprofit against bullying. The thing is since it’s uncommon in Spain, I had little to no idea and even though I researched it stayed in a social media account. However in IB I’ve taken business, I have a broader vision of how it works and I would love to continue with it but I don’t want it to seem performative😭

So basically if it’s not a true passion turned project then direct your focus elsewhere?

So what would you recommend for students who are trying to start a passion project and show impact in their community?

My rising sophomore has a strong desire to get into politics/local government specifically to ensure kids have basic needs met. He's wanting to start a club centered around aiding families and kids specifically k-5th grade with clothes, holiday expenses, school supplies, and hygiene care. He said his main goal sophomore year is to adopt 2 families to start and develop a deep relationship and then expand to more families and even community events down the road. Would you say that his club idea is a sound choice?

Is creating my own platform where people could learn coding for free a good idea for my passion project?

What if it’s niche, fits an unmet need in your community, has local support and traction and fits into your overall narrative

I’m in photography club for 2 years now and have become passionate about it, and this coming year I’m a junior, I was thinking about starting a passion project not for college but for myself to take pictures since I love doing it and want to show my work to others. That is passion I have and do not for admissions but for myself, and will do the page in instagram, called eye for structure

What if youre genuinely starting up something that can help others but it’s nearing the application period. In my case for instance, I want to develop an Olympiad with some friends of mine but this opportunity has only become possible for me because I switched schools this past year. Do you recommend I no longer see the project through, not include it in my apps at all or what do you suggest? ( I want to know if including this would also be seen as performative)

I totally agree, as a juniors counselor, I always hear these stories of projects that want to start at 11 grade or even for threr senior Year. That is obvious, it is for admissions, and that shows no passion.

can you elaborate more on performative? what if it’s unique, something you’re really passionate about, supports your future goals and not passively a non profit (for example i’m working on a sub stack/blog that connects to my aspirations of pediatrics but from a unique angle of nutritional sciences that aligns with my personal story and interests). does it need to have insane or national impact?

he's right. founding something WAS one of the biggest differentiators, but the ones that worked weren't just 'i started a nonprofit' - they showed real scale, consistent commitment over years, and actual measurable impact. it's the difference between creating a website and building something that helped hundreds of real people

What do you think about doing bake sales for approx 5 years in my school community and helping a cause next to our school? Is that a good thing to put on an application or is there a way to improve the ec a bit more?
