The drain hose is to drain the water into a container before undoing the filter so the water doesn't end up on the floor.

Depends on the brand - mine doesn’t have one … it flushes its own ‘filter’ each time it does a load of washing .. I checked the manual .. top loader .. never needs the filter cleaned

I knew about this filter when I first got my washing machine… by then proceeded to forget about it for nine years. Boy was that first load of washing on a whole new level of clean after finally cleaning the filter 👌👀
