I think ur right, it's gonna become increasingly difficult to be completely detached from genAI in gaming, but we can absolutely keep it from being normalized by calling out companies that use it and withholding our time/money from those that don't listen to the complaints and continue pushing AI slop out

I'm against generative AI, especially with art. but I'm at the point now where I cannot be bothered to avoid every single instance of ai. Every social media uses ai and has an AI chatbot. most games use ai in some form in their development. companies use ai in their advertisements. tv shows and movies are using ai at some point in the process. will I continue to be against generative AI? yes. will I stop playing any game that uses it, using any social media that uses it, buying from brands that use it? no.

Personally, I hate gen ai, I agree it definitely shouldn’t be normalized by any means. I think I draw the line at a game like NTE, which actively uses AI and doesn’t seem at all ashamed. I will not be playing the game because of this. But say if one day, a game I have loved and know the devs have worked hard on fell down a rabbit hole of ai…I wouldn’t stop playing, I would review the thing. My friend likes to bring up a thing called “review bombing” which has been done with genshin once before. I think review bombing when a game company is doing their game or their players wrong should be normalized, especially now with the rise of AI. This does not mean I have the belief that people should be attacked, or threatened. But, they should have nicely worded complaints explaining that the use of generative ai is not ok and should not continue to be used in games. But that is only my personal opinion.

I find it really interesting in the case of Identity V, players have been criticizing, emailing, review bombing, spam commenting, boycotting and more for nearly a month now because of the Netease’s Gen AI usage in Identity V, but (to my knowledge) the company has not issued any statements in regard to this. However, another popular NE game, Marvel Rivals, recently tried to slip in a set of Ai Generated emotes with a new skin. Players took notice and the backlash was instantaneous, which led to the emotes being remade by a human artist.

ive been playing NTE the entire week and im lvl 32 and i genuinely havent even noticed any Ai myself because i dont pay attention to every single billboard or illustration there is, its not that big of a deal unless it ruins the gameplay

For me personally, AI can be used only as a tool and not on creatives job example is Art, concept, instead invest on the maintance, bug fixing, Auto correct, Automization, and thus similar to that.

Here's the thing: the view on AI is shifting, including within big corp: human-made craft is INCREASING in value and AI is seen as "fast food of art" (negative connotation) more and more. Companies are investing extra to film their process and prove that their product was human-made. Also, first laws about AI are being implemented. I think we're on the right track.

Fully agree. To me this issue is so more complex AND common than most people think. genAI is used so much by companies and that includes gaming companies, and that is a choice made by higher ups. I'm sorry but if people believe Hoyoverse doesn't use genAI at all, they're delusional. Netease, Cygames, Square Enix, Hotta Studio- they all use genAi. And the reality is using other artists work was always part of the creative industry, it's nothing new, genAI has just made this x100 worse and we should point it out, but like you said "cancelling" it affects the lives of the real artist that worked on the game/product. On the topic of NTE it annoys me so much because it feels like people just want to attack NTE instead of actually criticizing and having a convo on the usage of genAI, because when you bring up Hoyoverse they suddenly don't want to talk about it. Also, a bit off topic, but I'm personally very irked that people get this loud on social media about a random gaming company using genAi but when we have real workplace abuse cases, people just don't care and keep playing the games. It feels like performative activism, they don't really care about making change they just want to feel morally superior. It's also so difficult to have a conversation about this without people completely misinterpreting the point. I'm against genAI, I'm an artist, but this topic is more nuanced than just "umm genAI bad!!!1!". It's impossible to discuss it becaude people would rather like the 36274th tweet clowning on NTE (that is obviously engagement bait), pat themselves on the back, and call it a day. This video is so well put and I'm glad you're actually speaking about it.
