Atrocities have been committed against innocent people since the founding of America. Why wouldn’t the “elites” eat children, gRape, torture and experiment on them?Slave owners did it. White nihilism is always interesting because it treats violence and instability like something new, when for Black and brown people both in the global south and in Western countries, this has been the reality for a long time shaped by colonialism and what came after it. I remember being in an X Space around the Ferguson protests in 2020. A white protester had been killed by police and people were saying things like “America is finished,” like it was the end of the world. It stood out because Ferguson itself was about a Black man being killed by police, which is part of a long ongoing pattern, but it only felt like a crisis when it was closer to them. As a Black African, I might not know every system by name, but I can see the pattern clearly. What Black Americans face with policing and state violence is not separate from what Black people experience elsewhere, it just shows up differently but still tied to the same global systems. People in the global south have lived with war, exploitation, and structural violence for generations. But when even a fraction of that reaches the West, it suddenly becomes “civilization collapsing.” It really shows how differently suffering is seen depending on who it happens to.
