On August 23, Byzantine Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes captured Manzikert. On August 26, his forces marched on the Seljuk positions. The battle had begun. Romanos captured Alp Arslan’s camp, but as it grew dark, he ordered a retreat, since there was no point in further pursuit. He just couldn’t force the Seljuks into a pitched battle. Alp Arslan had been waiting for this moment and ordered the attack immediately. The Byzantine forces were confused. They thought their Emperor had been killed in battle, so chaos erupted among the troops. The reserves were supposed to come to the Emperor’s aid and cover his retreat, but that didn’t happen, largely due to the efforts of General Andronikos Doukas. He hated Romanos and was one of his biggest opps (Romanos lowk had a feud with the whole Doukas family, so this hatred was generational lol). Andronikos told his troops the battle was lost, and they marched away from the battlefield. Appointing Doukas as a commander was a major mistake and one of the main causes of the Byzantine defeat at the Battle of Manzikert. The Emperor thought he was making a wise choice, since leaving Doukas “to stir up trouble in Constantinople” would be dangerous. Well, guess what, Bromanos?🙏💔 P. S.
