Honestly, I’m mad they changed the meaning of Toga’s speech. She says in the manga that she ‘lived and loved as she pleased’ before saying this. It was never about loving or getting together with Izuku. It was about Uraraka learning to live her life and love the way she wants without feeling guilty about Toga’s death and what could’ve been. And then there was that whole allegory with Toga’s blood running through her still, and the way she haunted Uraraka’s narrative for EIGHT YEARS AND SHE CREATED THAT PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN FOR QUIRK COUNSELLING SO THEY WOULDN’T END UP LIKE TOGA. Her entire story after the war is built around Toga and the guilt she had for her. THIS is what the speech is about. Not get together with your homeboy. Same thing with Bakugou’s speech. ‘If everyone is special to you, nobody really is’ and him inviting him to the agency as his rival. Izuku wants to stick with teaching because that’s the job he’s had after graduation and he’s decided that’s his path, quirk or no quirk because it was his only tether to what used to be his childhood dream. Bakugou sees this and his old friend and wants him to live his life to the fullest, and also misses him MASSIVELY but ultimately understands. This is why I think Izuku wants to talk more with Ochako. Because they both understand each other and have grief in common, and using Bakugou’s speech on her is about Toga and Shigaraki. Because Deku feels guilty about Shigaraki in the way that Ochako feels guilty about Toga. Not because he wants to confess his love for her or something. But because he relates to her after ‘It’s my fault that Toga is dead!’ during their school years. He recognizes the grief and pain because he feels it too, but he understand after losing his quirk that there’s no going back or thinking about what could’ve been, because he’s chosen to make the most of what he could do at the time: Teach and pass on his knowledge, much like OFA did to him. Ochako’s still stuck in the past, however, and this is why changing Toga’s speech even subtly makes zero sense from the character development perspective. Thank you for coming to my pep talk: why I think Bones Studios misread the manga.
