@ddnonkler: Kai Tak Airport was Hong Kong’s main international airport from 1925 to 1998 and became one of the most famous—and challenging—airports in the world. Originally built on reclaimed land in Kowloon Bay, it was surrounded by dense urban buildings and mountains, which made landings difficult. Pilots had to perform a low-altitude turn known as the “Checkerboard Approach” just before touchdown, flying extremely close to skyscrapers. Despite its risks, Kai Tak handled millions of passengers and became iconic for its dramatic city landings. Quite surreal, my moms first time flying was leaving Hong Kong through Kai Tak to come to immigrate to America at 18yrs old. I’m in college now and have a great appreciation for the life this airport helped my family build.
