Love comes back in a different way. I knew a man in Alcoholics Anonymous who said, “I believe there is an unlimited amount of love in the universe, and the only thing that blocks our access to it is our desire for love to come from a specific source.” He was speaking about addiction, which robs us of our ability to find love and comfort, but he could just as easily have been talking about any obsession or infatuation. The Tibetans call it “seeing the sky through a straw.” When we cling — to wanting a certain job or relationship or situation to work out — we see only a tiny sliver of our vast potential. Our desire to make anything “work out,” in fact, is a setup for feeling unloved. This is why, when we feel betrayed or abandoned, the best thing we can do is NOT try to figure anything out, but simply take a step back and observe our suffering. Where there is more space, more sky, we see that we were never without love. When I was younger, so much of my life was organized around proving my specialness. I wanted people to see how smart I was, how talented a musician, how brilliant a writer. But no matter how I pushed my light out into the world, what came back was only the feeling of being ignored and forgotten. It was when I started to think of my music and writing not as self-expression, but as a dictation I take from the voices in my head, that I started to feel loved for what I do: not by any external audience, but by the creative process itself. You can never lose love. You can lose the demands you place on love, but you never had those to begin with. Those demands are like holding a beachball under water: when you finally release your grip, the ball will surface again, though often sideways and not in the direction you expected. You have to pay attention. Love comes back. It comes back in a different way, but it always comes back. . #clinging #specialness #mindfulness #meditation #Love
