Exhale gently the entire time your face is in the water. I breathe every other stroke.

I take a breath every 3-4 strokes and slowly release my breath in between those 3-4 strokes.

The moment your face submerges you start to exhale slowly, then before you rotate to breath you complete your exhale, rotate and breath. Effortless swimming on YouTube is a great tool.

Blow bubbles out underwater. When you turn your head, you should only be breathing in. I was a swim teacher for like five years. I like to teach bilateral breathing (every three strokes), but if that’s too difficult, breathe every four strokes on the same side.

Breathe every 2-3 strokes, inhale 60-70% capacity. Start exhaling immediately, you should already be exhaling before your face enters the water. Use a kickboard, hold it in front of you and just practice breathing. If you feel out of breath you are probably holding your breath and storing co2. Never hold your breath. It should be even in and out. You will have to slow down until you learn to breathe.

Breath out through your nose when your face is down in the water and breath in through your mouth when you turn your head towards the surface

For beginners, breathe only on one side. You need to blow your breath out into the water. (It’s like how we teach babies to blow bubbles in the water . That is your out breath.) so when you turn your head to breath - you are only breathing in

always breath out your nose when your face is in the water then when you needed to breathe in turn your head to your side. then repeat that. also stay relaxed throughout your stroke. the secret to swimming is being relaxed and powerful

Breathe OUT through your nose while your face is under the water. You also need to be rotating your body while you swim (hips and shoulders moving as one unit), and as you rotate, lift your head to the side above the surface, and breathe in through your mouth. Relax!

If you hum under water…the bubbles come out automatically and prevent water from going up your nose….then turn your head to the side to get more air with one of your arm strokes

Pick a side that feels natural. Breathe when your arm comes outta the water. Breather out face down in the water.

Exhale ALL your air when your face is in the water — you will naturally inhale when you turn to breathe. Focus on the exhale — not the inhale.

As soon as my face hits the water. Breathe every other stroke (or, for me every left stroke - breathe only right). I think using a snorkel helped me get a rhythm of breathe out - breath in.

Lose the swim cap. You can feel your head position better, and you’re not that fast that you need the stream line.

I think this is not technically recommended but got me over the hump, I open mouth exhale breathe as soon as my mouth rolls back into the water, if I have any air left to exhale when I roll out I just slowmo the recovering arm and breathe out then in again kind of under my armpit before rolling back. Actual swim ppl can correct me but this got me to the point where I can do 1k yds no stopping so it’s worked enough for me

Something that works for me is thinking about it like “sipping” air not “gulping” air. Goal (for me) is to the get the right amount of air that I can expell it in 4 strokes and then take another sip. Blowing out the entire time my face is in the water.
