This is such a good example of why newborn sleep can be so confusing, because when a baby is wide awake, fighting every nap and becoming increasingly unsettled, the natural assumption can be that they’re simply not tired yet. For Isaac, the opposite was true. At only 4 weeks old, he was staying awake for much longer than his little body could comfortably manage and, by the time his parents were trying to get him to sleep, he was already overtired. The more overtired he became, the more alert and unsettled he became, which made sleep harder again, and very quickly they were caught in an exhausting cycle. And I think Elena’s story is particularly powerful because she was a neonatal nurse. She knew babies incredibly well, yet nobody had ever taught her this part of newborn sleep. Once they adjusted Isaac’s awake times and supported his sleep with a few simple changes, they noticed a difference on the very first day. Not because Isaac had been “trained” to sleep, and not because they’d stopped responding to him, but because they finally understood when his body was ready for sleep and what he needed to help him get there. That is really what we want parents to understand about newborn sleep. You don’t need a perfect routine and your baby certainly doesn’t need to be sleeping independently at four weeks old, but knowing a little about their biology, their sleep needs and their individual rhythm can make those early weeks feel so much easier. And I absolutely love that two years later Elena was still recommending Little Ones to her own patients and friends. That might be one of my favourite endorsements ever 🥹❤️ Make sure you're following us, because this week is all about newborn sleep xx
