On average they are anywhere from 4'10 to 5'7. There are some jockeys that are close to 6'0 though (Erik Assmussen, 5'10), but it's much harder for them to make weight.

this is a leg up, even tall riders not in horse racing often use this to quickly get on! putting a foot in the stirrup and pulling yourself up can hurt the horses back. so a leg up or a mounting block is the way to go

Also the gate where they run out of is small so if the horse is knocking into the side then the jockey can get hurt so they want them on before entering the gates
