I think when they said meatless it was in terms of lack of meat which was expensive. Rather than fat, which was cheaper. Meatless =/= vegan, or vegetarian in thise sense.

Amazing. When things were tough , with people having little money and no refrigeration, this makes sense. I also suspect , if you were poor, you could only get the fat , that no one wanted .. and you had to make do. Anyone that doesn’t appreciate this really have forgotten what some people went through
