I don’t think it’s as one-note as that. He had a selfish motivation, but he didn’t feel good about the prospect of erasing her memories either. He wasn’t neutral to the act of showing her mercy. He was still kind to her, he still comforted her, and he still treated her well after taking her in. When she puts herself in danger he says “If she dies we’ll lose more than just her” meaning he’d still mourn her if she died, but he’d also mourn the information she could give him. He’s a very morally grey character, which means he has both good and bad traits. He cares about his students, and he also cares about his goals. Those two things can coexist.

Everything good he's done has always, ALWAYS initially been selfish. That doesn't mean he's heartless, though. Quite the opposite. He's never able to remain selfish after the fact, because at the end of the day he cares so deeply and he always fails to run from that.
