@ourblueplanet0: During storms, giraffes don’t react the way smaller animals do. Instead of searching for shelter, they often stay out in the open and quietly wait it out. In the savanna, there isn’t much cover to begin with, so they might stand still, continue grazing, or slowly move toward trees or thicker vegetation—mostly to lessen the wind rather than escape the rain. Their large bodies and thick skin make it easier for them to handle getting wet and dealing with cooler temperatures. And unlike many other animals, they neither have the instinct nor the option to hide in burrows or dens. Only when storms become especially intense, with strong winds or lightning, do giraffes shift slightly toward lower ground or more protected spots. Even then, they usually don’t try to flee—they simply endure the storm where they are.
