I hate when a "breakdown" scene is just a character crying while internally monologuing about how sad they are, why they're sad, their past trauma that caused them to act the way they did, a random metaphor to explain how dad they are, and then maybe a muttered curse or something

a great way to learn showing not telling is to watch film and animation. especially during sequences where there is little to no dialog. the beginning sequence in Up is a masterclass in showing.

I swear so many people think "show don't tell" is just adding more flowery language to what is essentially bullet point salad of whatever barebones plot they came up with. saying "Melody walked up the dusty path towards town, headed for the mercentile" instead of "Melody walked to mercentile in town." is *still* just telling me what Melody did.

100% agree. I’d just add one thing: you don’t have to show everything. Part of the craft lies in making narrative choices. If you show everything, you overwhelm the reader with images that may not be equally important. It’s about setting priorities, in line with the story’s intent.
