Gandalf can’t do too much to influence the ring due to its inherent corrupting nature. He might try to subconsciously get Frodo to navigate to a spot where Gandalf will need to take possession of the ring.

I always took it as, he was hoping Frodo would take his side and keep going over the mountain pass. Then he gets discouraged, because Frodo chose the worst possible option.

I think it was this. People were arguing against Gandalf. Gandalf knew exactly what Frodo would say, and he used that knowledge to do an end run around the people who were arguing because they'd argue with a wizard, but they couldn't gainsay the Ringbearer

Hate to be that guy but, read the books. See, it's a realm of magic . There are fates & destinies and Frodo has his...to destroy the ring. So Gandalph is taking a chance that Frodo's choice will be influenced by his destiny. And it was. 😁
