People need to understand that she is also learning this WITH her son. yall need to know that learning a NEW language on top of one that you use every day is significantly harder than growing up with a language that automatically stiks to you .

You are an incredible mother and I love your videos! One tip, more recent studies show that sim-com is not the best route even though it’s popular in some Deaf schools. Of course the rest of your family is hearing so it’s the best approach for everyone to have access to language when you’re all together. But, you should implement a period of time during the day where you guys have voice off time and only sign as he gets older and you guys learn more signs/ASL grammar as a family. Especially since he’s shown signs of not really wanting to wear his CI. I have a great film that explains this better if you need:)

Tho I understand your point wdym your class hasn’t covered grammar… that’s like … asl 1 cause you’re speaking pse not asl which is fine but it’s pse maybe that was the confusion just say you’re learning pse to teach him english alongside signs ? I don’t get why it’s a weird question

Can you give an example of proper ASL grammar vs Simcom? And what does Simon mean? Thank you queen!

As someone who was born deaf and signed as a child, I had no one to sign to. My parents didn’t learn and no one at school did either. I forgot most of it, and now I’m learning again because my 2.5 yo grandson, who’s not deaf, has started to learn because my daughter in law doesn’t want to leave me out of communicating with him. He’s 2.5 and knows more than me.

For anyone curious, there’s a few ways to sign. ASL specifically is a formal language with its own grammar

I think you do PSE which is correct. I am an educational interpreter and most kids use PSE. Actually all the kids I have interpreted for used PSE.

I have an ASL Linguistics degree and the grammar still gets me sometimes, access is the most important part, grammar can be corrected later. If you ever need extra resources for like signs and stuff I used Handspeak.com in college for a lot of my citations and I always recommend it to people learning

A friend asked me what I thought of your post. I told them you are doing exactly the right thing.
Building a strong bond with your son during these early years is so important. Children absorb an incredible amount of information before they turn 5, so every moment you invest now matters more than you know. Keep going. Because of you, he will thrive in school and carry that foundation into a wonderful life.
As for ASL grammar structure, that will come naturally for both of you over time. Do not stress about it too much. If I were in your shoes, I would focus on one thing right now. Nurturing your child until he is able to freely express his feelings and thoughts. Everything else will follow.
