Upon further investigation, these people always have words to comfort, encourage, or offer non-patronizing advice to those who approach them. On the other hand, there are also people who are always hurtful and sarcastic toward others, as if no one is good except themselves. The Apostle Paul recognized both of these characteristics. He categorized people who are prone to lying, quick-tempered, and often use foul language as characteristics of the old self. They are prone to slander, often harbor bitterness, and cause trouble. In contrast, Paul demonstrated the characteristics of the new self: always speaking words that build up and bring grace to others. New humans are also those who are friendly to one another, full of love and forgiving each other. All these good things imitate Christ who is full of forgiving love. In his advice, the Apostle Paul asked that those of us who have believed in Christ must put off our old self and put on the new self. That means, God has given us new life through Jesus Christ, but we ourselves must learn to change according to His example. Change is not easy. Nevertheless, we never give up hope.
