@mum_makes_moolah: This will make so much sense for you...👇🏻 A psychologist was explaining how your environment growing up shapes the way you think, react and move through life. And he mentioned something people now call the "council estate effect. The idea is that when you grow up around struggle, low income or chaotic environments, it actually trains you in certain life skills much earlier than most people. For example... You learn how to read people quickly. Because you grow up around lots of different personalities. You learn how to stand up for yourself Because if you don't, people will walk all over you. You learn resilience. Because things don't always go smoothly. You also learn how to hustle. You see people selling things. People finding ways to make money. People doing whatever they can to provide for their families. That environment doesn't just create struggle. It creates resourcefulness. And those exact traits are the same ones that help people succeed in business later in life. Confidence. Street smart. Quick decision making. Thick skin. The ability to keep going even when things feel hard. When I heard that explanation, it honestly clicked for me. Because so many successful people I know grew up in environments just like that. What some people see as a disadvantage can actually become a huge advantage. I'm so proud of being a council estate girl & even prouder to connect with people who grew up like me. I have a degree in psychology and I’ve never heard of this effect. Can you please state what research this is from and what psychologist has said this?

100% this. My council estate upbringing has made me better at my job. Im a social worker and can relate and there’s been nothing I haven’t been able to handle because of this. A degree can only teach you so much.

100%!!! Completely agree. I’m a council estate kid - privately educated, 2 degrees (undergrad and masters), business psychologist and I can handle anythinggggggg!!!! I’m so thankful for my childhood in a way! So many people I know flounder at the first hurdle. Cheers to council estate kids 🎉🎉🎉

That’s so rude!!! Not every family grew up in poverty on a council estate!! Both my parents worked, we had 2 cars and holidays abroad when I was growing up

That is not accurate whatsoever- 100% environmental influences and childhood development has a significant impact on adulthood but the explanation of the ‘council estate effect’ is an inaccurate and narrow portrayal

I was born 1960 just believed everyone lived in council flats had my daughters at 20 yet by 21 she had 3 babies honestly the insults from ppl just like me were insulting. By 22 she went back to college ( the borough we lived in offered a free teaching degree ) that is my daughter & eldest grandson in my profile. She is now a deputy head in a secondary school in the same area she was brought up. I will say I now realise my daughter was extremely bright & thankfully she used it. Btw married the dad to her kids.

One thing about growing up on a council estate, it makes you resilient to most things life throws at you.

Grew up in the 60s on a tough London council estate. Didn’t know any different so you just got on with everyone. Everyone knew each other, there was respect
