@pocket.psychologist: If your brain gets louder the moment your head hits the pillow, you’re not broken. Usually, it’s a nervous system that still feels switched on. After a full day of decisions, pressure, input, stress, and mental load… your body doesn’t instantly power down just because you got into bed. That’s why trying to “think positive” or force sleep often backfires. You can’t think your way to sleep.
You have to signal safety through the body first. Three practical tools that help: • Wind down before bed, not at bed
Give your nervous system time to transition. • Try cognitive shuffling
Pick a random word like pocket and imagine unrelated images for each letter. It helps interrupt spiralling thoughts. • Name what’s happening
“I’m replaying that conversation.”
Naming moves it out of alarm mode and lowers intensity. Sleep is a nervous system skill.
And it can be learned. If you love practical psychology like this, my mini course goes deeper into tools for confidence, emotional wellbeing, habits, boundaries, and real-life change. Link in bio for more details 🫶

I used to do Sudoku puzzles, to switch my brain from thinking about my day into dealing with safe/low risk decisions.

I like the cognitive shuffling idea. I haven’t tried that one. But I’m having a lot better sleep now. My current routine is to take a Tylenol just one. Take a hot shower. Take a 1 mg melatonin 12 hours before I wanna wake up.
