Then in the 1960s California did something unusual: instead of restoring it or letting it crumble, the state chose to preserve Bodie in a condition called "arrested decay," keeping it exactly as it was found, weathered but never fixed up and never allowed to fall down, so today you can walk its silent streets and peer through dusty windows at homes and shops frozen mid-life, the best-preserved ghost town in the American West. And then there's the curse: legend says anyone who takes anything from Bodie (even a rusty nail, a shard of glass, or a single rock) will be struck with terrible misfortune, and to this day rangers receive packages from visitors returning stolen items with desperate letters begging forgiveness and swearing the curse ruined their lives. So if you visit, take all the photos you want, but whatever you do, don't take a souvenir.
