He ignited it inside the carriage and walked off the train before the flames took hold. What happened in the minutes that followed became one of the deadliest arson attacks in modern history. The fire spread through the interior of the train with a speed that the materials used in the carriages accelerated rather than resisted. Thick black smoke filled the station and tunnels almost immediately, dropping visibility to near zero and making evacuation a matter of seconds that many passengers simply didn't have. A second train entered the station as the situation was already beyond control - its passengers now trapped in the same smoke-filled environment, its cars adding to the scale of the crisis that emergency responders were racing to reach. 192 people died. Many were found in their seats, overcome by smoke before they could reach the exits. The scale of the fire and the speed at which the tunnels filled made rescue efforts extraordinarily difficult for the teams that arrived to find conditions that made entry nearly impossible. Kim was arrested days later and sentenced to life in prison.
