@cogito.rebellion: part 358 | more from plotinus? ordinary knowledge works at a distance. you stand here, the object stands there, and understanding is the result of your mind correctly mapping what is over there from over here. subject and object remain separate. knowledge is a representation, a picture, a more or less accurate model. plotinus looks at this account of knowledge and says it describes only the weakest kind. the highest form of knowing, he argues across the enneads, is not a picture of the thing. it is a union with it. you do not know the good by constructing a theory of the good. you know it by becoming good. you do not know beauty by analysing beauty. you know it by becoming beautiful in the soul, which means purified, unified, turned fully toward the source of beauty. the knowing and the becoming are not separate steps. they are the same movement. this is the argument at the heart of ennead iii.8, which opens with the claim that all things, from the lowest level of nature up through the human soul to the divine intellect, are engaged in contemplation. action, for plotinus, is just weak contemplation- what happens when the inner vision is not strong enough to stay still and must express itself outward. the return journey is from action back toward contemplation, and from contemplation toward identity. what makes this land beyond neoplatonic metaphysics is the practical implication. what you give your sustained attention to, you become. not as a figure of speech but as an account of how transformation actually works. the person who spends years in the presence of great music, great ideas, great lives, is shaped by that presence from the inside out. you are, slowly, what you contemplate. plotinus was born in egypt around 204 ce and studied philosophy in alexandria under ammonius saccas for eleven years before moving to rome, where he taught philosophy and wrote the enneads in the latter part of his life. he was the founder of neoplatonism, the philosophical tradition that synthesised plato’s metaphysics with elements of aristotle, stoicism, and eastern thought into a unified account of reality organised around three principles: the one, the intellect, and the soul. the enneads — meaning “groups of nine” — were edited and arranged posthumously by his student porphyry from plotinus’s lecture notes and essays. they run to six groups of nine treatises. ennead iii.8, titled “on nature, contemplation, and the one,” contains some of the most concentrated development of the idea expressed in this quote. #philosophy #dailyquotes #darkacademiaaesthetic #plotinus #mindfulness
