@recorded.human.his: In the context of the Vietnam War, "Psychological Warfare" (PSYOP) was referred to as the battle for "Hearts and Minds." It was a sophisticated, multi-layered effort by both the United States and the North Vietnamese/Viet Cong to influence the emotions, motives, and reasoning of both soldiers and civilians. Here is an overview of the primary tactics used: 1. U.S. and South Vietnamese Tactics The U.S. 4th Psychological Operations Group was responsible for most of these initiatives, distributing billions of leaflets and broadcasting thousands of hours of audio. The Chieu Hoi ("Open Arms") Program This was perhaps the most successful U.S. psychological campaign. It encouraged Viet Cong (VC) and North Vietnamese Army (NVA) soldiers to defect to the South Vietnamese side. The Incentive: Defectors were promised amnesty, food, clothes, and help finding a job. The Result: Over 100,000 soldiers defected over the course of the war. While many were "low-level" fighters, the intelligence they provided was invaluable. Operation Wandering Soul The U.S. took advantage of Vietnamese spiritual beliefs, specifically the idea that a person must be buried in their homeland or their soul will wander the earth in pain. The "Ghost Tapes": Engineers recorded eerie sounds—distorted voices of "dead" NVA soldiers, crying children, and funeral music. The Delivery: These tapes were played from loudspeakers on helicopters or "Swift Boats" at night in the jungle to terrify enemy soldiers and convince them to desert before they died far from home. Leaflet Drops The U.S. Air Force dropped nearly 50 billion leaflets over Vietnam. Safe Conduct Passes: These were the most famous, essentially "coupons" that guaranteed an enemy soldier safe passage if they surrendered. Death Themes: Many leaflets featured gruesome images of dead soldiers to remind the enemy of the lethality of American firepower (like the B-52 strikes). 2. North Vietnamese and Viet Cong Tactics The North relied heavily on nationalistic pride, the "foreign invader" narrative, and demoralizing American troops. Hanoi Hannah Trịnh Thị Ngọ, known to Americans as Hanoi Hannah, was the most famous propaganda broadcaster for North Vietnam. The Strategy: She spoke English and played popular American music to get GIs to listen. The Message: She would read the names of U.S. casualties, talk about civil rights riots in the U.S., and suggest that American wives and girlfriends were being unfaithful back home. The goal was to make soldiers feel that the war was a lost cause and that they were being forgotten by their country. Terrorism and "Armed Propaganda" The Viet Cong used psychological warfare through targeted violence: Village Coercion: VC units would enter villages and "liquidate" (execute) government officials, teachers, or anyone cooperating with the South. This served as a psychological warning to the rest of the population. The "Invincible" Image: By disappearing into tunnels and launching surprise ambushes, the VC created a psychological sense of "omnipresence"—the idea that the enemy was everywhere and nowhere at the same time. #earth #HistoryTime #war #

Ginuwine :
Funny thing is, US Soldiers actually found this very entertaining more than “frightening.” Same thing with Viet soldiers as well, psychological warfare worked but not as much as you think it did, neither sides were truly afraid of either’s psychological tricks.

Hanoi Hannah was a horrible person and was a traumatic experience for veterans and still is today - these young boys/men where drafted into a war against communism for economic gain - the war was heavily protest by American citizens through the war and many American war hero’s were condemned even though they had no choice put respect on every single veteran’s sacrifice and serves

The reason the Vietnamese soldiers had this playing over loud speakers during the war was to lower the American’s spirits and psychologically hurt them
