I'm thoroughly convinced that the VAST majority of people saying LOTR is better have never read LOTR. It's innovative and has some truly great stuff, but man it can get tiresome for long stretches. If you want fantastical adventure and 89 pages of singing sure LOTR is far better for that. But ASOIAF has far superior character work to the point where you can probably find dozens of background characters that are almost as compelling or interesting as the main characters in LOTR, and the writing is just far more consistent in ASOIAF, in ASOIAF you can literally guess what's going to happen if you're paying enough attention, not because it's obvious but because it all makes sense. Like on a second read you can literally see Bolton and Frey and the Lannisters putting the pieces in place for the red wedding before it happens, but most people don't put it all together on first read. Meanwhile in LOTR I hate to say it but Tolkein kindof just inserts new lore on the fly to make things go well for the heroes and it can be *really* obvious at times, although Gollum destroying the Ring, driving home Tolkeins idea that even if good can't defeat evil, evil will always destroy itself is some masterful shit, and that's what I mean when I say LOTR is innovative, it's got alot of shit that genuinely holds up and how much fiction it's directly inspired over an entire century is insane. If you want to say LOTR is the more impactful or iconic work of fiction that's 100% true. But people claiming it's an objectively "better" work of fiction are lying to themselves, or have only consumed the streamlined and polished movie adaptations. JRRT laid the groundwork, GRRM improved on it.
