Just play your football.’ I said, ‘The game is already stretched, so don’t be afraid to take your man on. If you see the space, attack it. If you lose the ball, go again.’ I also told him, ‘Your first touch has to tell them what kind of night they’re going to have.’ [laughs] He’s a young player, so sometimes you can put too much information into his head. I didn’t want that. I wanted him to come on, be brave and make their defenders uncomfortable. I said, ‘Don’t worry about making a mistake. I would rather see you try something and lose the ball than receive it and play safe because you’re scared.’ And I told him one more thing before he went on: ‘When you get the ball, make them make a decision. Don’t make the decision for them.’ That was the message. He came on and immediately started asking questions of them. He was direct, confident and fearless. That’s what we wanted to see.
