In Karelia (Finland) there is a story of the world being born from an aythya's egg (sort of a duck). In the story the bird lays seven eggs on Ilmatar's lap, six golden, one of iron. Ilmatar is a sort of a goddess, who decends from the heavens to the sea. After laying the eggs, Ilmatar starts to move around so that the eggs break. From the eggs the Earth, the heavens, the stars, the Sun and the Moon are formed.

In orthodox, as Jesus was carrying the cross to the mount, a woman who had just collected the eggs from the chickens said, “if he truly is, then these eggs will turn red.” They turned red. This is why in orthodox we color the eggs on Thursday of Holy Week and Thursday only.
