Representation matters. I am an orphan raised by my grandparents. Great, yes. But imagine; for one second, you lose your parents twice.. in one life. Spider-Man is the only hero that goes through that same pain. One horrible thing after another, he doesn’t prevail. He endures. He traverses this pain. He OVERCOMES. He finds a way to not just be a horribly traumatized boy, but he falters, he fails, he trips up. Next, he finally does prevail.. He arises. I’m losing my second pair of parents here soon. They don’t have long left. Spider-Man is the singular Marvel hero that I can lean into. Stanley understood the importance of what being a hero actually means. I thank this man daily. Hero’s are not born of just the pain. Not one instance. Most certainly not one challenge. Spider-Man is the pure example of a hero that endured long term l. He starts in this state. When he becomes a hero, he is unable to save the love of his life. Stan twught me that true hero’s endure. He reminded me that power is not strength. He showed me heroism and he reminded me that mere humans(going through it all) are where we find the I
