His name was Pheidippides and he was a messenger/courier (Hemerodromoi) and yes...he did fight in the Battle Of Marathon. It's highly unlikely he wore his helmet/breastplate... these were used in battle. Messengers needed to be fast, and often would run naked. Hence the first Olympic marathons were ran naked as well.

Before the battle even started, he was sent from Athens to Sparta to beg for their military alliance against the invading Persians. He ran an astonishing 150 miles (240 km) through rugged mountains to get to Sparta, and he did it in just 36 hours. Quora.
