The lid was already open when someone heard him move. At first, it sounded like trash settling. A paper cup sliding. A can rolling. A black bag shifting under its own weight. Then two small eyes looked up from inside the dumpster. He was sitting in the middle of what people had thrown away, his curly fur dirty and matted, his little body tucked between empty containers, crushed cans, and torn plastic. He did not bark. He did not jump. He did not try to climb out. He just looked up. He looked like he had already called for help in every way he knew, and the world had answered by getting louder around him. Cars passed nearby. A door opened across the street. Somewhere, someone laughed, then kept walking. Inside the blue metal bin, he stayed still. There was food smell everywhere, but no real food. Just wrappers. Sour paper cups. Empty cans. Plastic lids with nothing left inside. The kind of place a hungry dog might crawl into thinking there would be one bite worth finding. Before that morning, he had probably been wandering for a while. Small dogs disappear into city corners easily. Under parked cars. Behind buildings. Along sidewalks where people are too busy to look down. He may have followed the smell of breakfast from one trash can to another, nose low, paws tired, stomach empty. Maybe he once had a home. Maybe someone once brushed those curls, wiped his face, lifted him onto a couch. Maybe he knew the sound of a bowl being filled before life changed and he was left to figure out hunger alone. Or maybe the street was all he had known for too long. Either way, by the time he found the dumpster, he was desperate enough to climb in. And too tired to climb back out.
