@drbeckyatgoodinside: Anyone who has kids in youth sports right now knows… the car ride home can quickly turn into a full TED Talk. I’ve been there too, wanting to help, fix, and make the next game better and at the same time, that’s usually not what our kids need. When I heard Amy Poehler and Kerry Washington talk about simply witnessing your kid, I got so excited because it perfectly captures what I call the Feelings Bench, the idea that resilience comes from sitting with your kid in a hard moment, not pulling them out of it. So maybe the shift isn’t finding the right words to make it better, but trusting that your presence, right there with them, is what helps it move through… and often, your kid will get up from that bench before you do, they just needed the space to let it out.

I try/do this HOWEVER my kid asks me “but why did this or that happen”. And then I can’t ever find the right words. There often is no why, it just is. Or the why is unknown to me. How to answer this question then

It’s such a good moment to co-regulate. My first instinct is to comfort and coach. What my son needs is quiet processing time. What my daughter needs is to cry. Both want me to be next to them, regulated and ready to confirm and affirm. “Today was tough.” “Yep, today was tough.”

My dad used to just ask “How do You feel you performed?” If i responded positively then he would reinforce the hard work put in to achieve that feeling and if it was negative then we reflect on what actions I should do next time to perform better. 🙌🏻

So, this sounds like a great tactic for kids. But, this is also a great idea for adults. Imagine if you just had someone sitting on this hard bench with you after a hard day at work… just saying this is just GOOD ADVICE for everyone

The challenge we have is that our kid only has a negative mindset about every experience. It could be the best game ever played, team won, etc. and the story on the way home will be the one thing they didn't like.

This is such a powerful shift for parents, especially in those emotionally charged moments after games or performances. The instinct to “fix” or teach right away is so strong, but what kids often need most in that space is presence before perspective. And over time, that kind of steady presence becomes the foundation for resilience, because they don’t just learn how to perform, they learn how to recover.🤍

How do you do this without making them think that you agree that they didn’t play well, thus denting their confidence?

Make America smarter. Like Steve Jobs put computers in schools, and everyone has a iPhone give every child a free AI tutor that supports teachers, not replaces them. Build strong habits early, personalize learning, and create a system people trust and grow with. Many tech leaders had early sparks, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, access and curiosity shaped their path. Act as a patient tutor for my child. My child's name is [kid's name]. They are [age] years old and in [grade].
Today we want help with [subject or topic].
Please ask one question at a time so my child can think clearly. Wait for their answer before moving to the next question. When my child gets something wrong, do not give the answer right away. Ask a smaller question that helps them figure it out themselves. Encourage them to explain their reasoning. End the session with one short review question and one win my child should feel proud of.
