The Moon’s gravity actually pulls on everything on Earth the oceans, boats, buildings, and even our own bodies but we notice its effect most clearly in the tides because water can move more freely than solid objects. The Moon’s gravitational pull is slightly stronger on the side of Earth that is closer to it and slightly weaker on the side farther away, creating a difference in force called a tidal force. This causes the ocean water to stretch and form bulges, which we experience as high tides. Boats do not get pulled separately because they are already floating on the water and move along with it as the tide rises and falls. Similarly, the land, buildings, and people are also being pulled by the Moon, but because solid ground is much more rigid and cannot flow like water, the movement is extremely small and usually impossible to notice. In fact, even the Earth’s crust slightly shifts due to the Moon’s gravity, but only by a few centimeters. So, the Moon’s gravity affects everything but the ocean reveals that effect most visibly because water is able to respond and move much more easily.
