Crazy part is if you make tips you can be paid under minimum wage. Got offered a job for 2.13

the best server i know is a career server who makes 100k a year at a mid tier casual dining restaurant. working 4 days a week. he is so charming and competent that he has dozens of people who come to see him and tip him weekly. he gives the best service ever; hes your absolute best friend while you're in his section, he'll memorize your order and have it sitting on the table when you walk in. if we took away tips servers like that would absolutely leave the industry. because he deserves to be paid what he is worth, and a restaurant would never ever pay him that. every food service management already complain about "labour costs" nonstop and they pay us all the legal bare minimum! the industry would be left with less passionate and skilled workers, because people who are that skilled at serving are genuinely highly skilled and could easily move into other more lucrative fields that would pay them what they're worth.

As a sever/bartender when I go out to eat I’m tipping 50%+ if my tab is low and if it’s high I tip 22%-25%. I like being the table that makes the servers night lol

Please remember that the reason servers make a little more per hour with tips is because it’s not a full 8 hour shift. Otherwise it would be closer to 20-25 per hour. There’s only certain times of day that are busy enough to make up for the remaining hours that are slow. My restaurant has to keep labor under 18% so the higher hourly employees get sent home first. Servers have to stay because it’s basically free labor. The entire structure would crumble if they just “paid us a livable wage”.

Right. I’m getting paid an hourly rate only, I’m never going to work a busy night, no refill, no to go boxes. Etc. I’ll be outside on tik tok.

I get that people get annoyed about tipping but it’s not the end of the world to give somebody a few extra dollars when you go out to eat or what have you. I always hope that that person had a better day because somebody left them a nice tip.

and I think a $40 burger is really conservative tbh 😭 bc if they pay servers / bartenders their tip average they’d most likely have to pay BOH more too

If we did away with tips, it would literally blow up the economy. People don't realize that we actually make 30-60 dollars an hour

In Australia people get paid a good hourly rate, no tips. Servers are reasonably nice and helpful - but not over the top. It’s how we like it.

1000% if I'm not getting tipped, I absolutely quit. 1000% of the time. I would absolutely work in an office and not deal with the restaurant drama for minimum wage.. probably more tbh

I'd definitely wouldn't work my serving job without tips. It's not worth it.

And every restaurant would be running with a bare bones crew because of labor costs so even if we wanted to continue to give good service we wouldn’t be able to

I think itd be helpful as someone with a platform to explain to people what gratuity is, and how that doesn’t mean that you now don’t have to tip your server. Thx

Never worked in the service industry, but I feel like 10% is the minimum in a dine in or bar situation but it’s getting kind of ridiculous when I go pick up takeout or get fast food and they expect a tip.

I was at bar that added 20% tip to every tab and it was the worst service I’ve had at a bar in ages

I am a server now. I would never do it for minimum wage or any wage. You are not going to find anyone that will do this.
