You recognize it instantly: a massive, bulbous fuselage, long tail boom, a high-mounted rotor, and the impression of a flying cargo truck built decades before its time. Developed in the 1950s, the CH-37 was created at a moment when the U.S. military urgently needed a rotorcraft capable of moving vehicles, troops, and heavy equipment into areas without runways or roads. Before the arrival of the CH-47 Chinook, the CH-37 stood among the most capable heavy helicopters of its era. It could carry dozens of fully equipped soldiers or payloads that were considered almost impossible for rotary-wing aircraft at the time. Its key engineering feature was unconventional for its time: two large piston engines mounted externally in pods on each side of the forward fuselage. This freed up internal volume for a spacious cargo bay and simplified the overall layout. At the front, clamshell doors opened wide, allowing vehicles and cargo to be driven straight inside. For the mid-20th century, this concept looked almost futuristic. But the giant had its drawbacks. The piston engines required intensive maintenance, fuel consumption was high, and overall operational complexity made it expensive to run. When turbine-powered helicopters arrived, offering better efficiency and performance, the Mojave quickly became obsolete. Still, aircraft like the CH-37 laid the foundation for modern heavy-lift rotorcraft.
