I'm usually really good about getting names, but when I don't, I will tell kids to "say your name for me" instead of guessing them.

On the first day, I print the rosters and when they walk in, i introduce myself and ask their name. “Hi, I’m Ms. W, what’s your name? So glad you’re in my class!” And then I write down the phonetic smelling/how I say it and helps get the nicknames out of the way too 😁

Knowing how to pronounce kids’ names is so important!! I have a bit of experience hearing my name wrong often, so I get it. A few years ago an asked a student, “Do you say your last name like this…?” I said it correctly, and he was so excited and said none ever says it’s right. While I was subbing while in college, I was calling roll and so many kids couldn’t believe I’d said their names right, they were in shock.

One of the first things I do is I have the kids record themselves saying their name. As a music teacher, I’ll often also play a game where they have to say it before I have a chance to screw it up. It’s important.

On the first day, I give kids an activity to do on their own, and then I walk around and introduce myself to each kid and hear them pronounce their name! It was a game changer for me this year

I always ask and be like "was that right?" It seems to always cheer them up when I ask "how is it pronounced" and proceed to mouth it 5 times to get it right. or how happy I get when I did get it right. Showing my students I care about even the little things for them

I do a name game (I know cheesy, but the only way I learn) on the 1st day. 1st person, says their name, animal, & something abt themselves. next person has to say the 1st person's name & animal, & then their stuff. 3rd person says name & animal of 1st 2 ppl, then their stuff, 2nd to last person was the 1st person, then I am last. It gets funny & by the end everyone knows the name & how to pronounce everyone's name.

I have my students make a video at the beginning of every semester where they say their name, and I listen to it regularly until I get it correct. I also have them correct me when I say it wrong in class.

Elementary art teacher: I always like to hear their name before reading it, like going around and saying, “Good morning, ____” and then I let them fill it in. I listen to it, say it back the way I hear it, and if it isn’t correct they can correct me and I repeat it back.

If I get on a call with a coworker who’s name I can’t even try to pronounce I ask. And if I can make a best guess I will still ask if it’s right. It’s not that difficult to get people’s names correct or at least close to correct

As a sub I always tell kids to tell me if I get it wrong. If I have time I look up pronunciations on names I’m really unsure about.
