@totallynotahandgrenade: The crash of TWA Flight 800 occurred on July 17, 1996, shortly after takeoff from John F. Kennedy International Airport en route to Paris. About 12 minutes into the flight, the Boeing 747-131 exploded and broke apart over the Atlantic Ocean near Long Island, killing all 230 people on board. The disaster prompted one of the most extensive investigations in aviation history, led by the National Transportation Safety Board with support from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Early speculation included terrorism or a missile strike, partly due to eyewitness reports of a streak of light rising toward the aircraft. However, after years of analysis, including reconstruction of the wreckage, investigators concluded that the most likely cause was an explosion in the aircraft’s center wing fuel tank. The ignition source was believed to be a short circuit in the wiring, which allowed electrical energy to enter the fuel tank and ignite flammable vapors. The tragedy led to significant changes in aviation safety, including improved fuel tank design, better wiring inspections, and new regulations to reduce the risk of similar explosions in commercial aircraft. #planecrash #fyp #xyzbca #1996 #unitedstates
