So this take is one of my gripes. I understand the sentiment and I love the idea of actors who may not normally fit the traditional lead archetype a better chance at a lead role. I find it problematic in the fact that it essentially calls Seymour actors ugly and unwanting. The show is based off of older material where the actor was far from balding and unattractive. The most popular version of the show with Rick Moranis is also not fitting that category. He’s a meek nerd who does not see his self worth. At his core that’s what he is. And while again I love giving opportunities to people who may get scoffed at in other roles, it becomes incredibly tone deaf to also judge actors looks on if the are “ugly” enough and sort of defeats the purpose of their entire romantic arc altogether.

I’ll just put it this way… not to make this about me, but I’m 100% perfect for Seymour as written (5’3, nerdy, balding, and from NYC). Out of all of the times I have submitted for Seymour in various productions, I have been called in ONCE and it was in 2012 when I was too young (and not balding yet lol).
