I think it comes from the medieval times, where pitch/tar (black in colour) and sulfur (both highly flammable) were used to defend castles. And the flames it created were considered as hell's flames, so it's already associated with bad luck. But also, "pitch" in German is called "Pech" , which you can literally translate back into "bad luck/misfortune".
