@anchorwoodworkshawaii: Oil based and water based topcoats, while serving the same purpose, have some distinct characteristics: • Oil based topcoats contribute more of an amber tint helping to enrich the color of the wood grain. The oil based resin used builds up into a durable finish after applying multiple layers. These types of topcoats are ideal for new work as well as wood restoration due to their toughness upon drying. However, clean up does require products like mineral spirits to clean brushes and spills. • On the other hand, water-based topcoats dry to a clear, transparent finish - ideal for painted surfaces or when ambering of the finish is not desired. These types of topcoat are generally used in the same ways as oil. — A notable advantage of this topcoats is the convenience in cleanups, only needing soap and water. Can also be diluted by adding more water. As well coats are extremely fast drying so you can get multiple coats on in a day. Important not to use oil based topcoats on top of water based or vise versa the products do not bond well to each other. If you don’t know which product was used it is always best to sand down to bare wood and pick the product that fits your product best. The decision to use either oil based or water based topcoats ultimately relies on your own preferences, the nature of the project, and the visual effect you wish to achieve. Regardless of your choice, always reference the manufactures guidelines for best application and apply thin even coats and allow the products to dry according to the manufacturer’s guidelines before applying the next coat. You can’t rush perfection, Take your time. The more coats you apply the more durable the finish.
