My brother died doing all he could to get his (our) bio mother to love him. He was gay and she just could pray the gay away. Needless to say, she messed us all up, so much abuse as children. Well 6 months after his death, she told my sons that he could have as many partners they wanted in life as long as their partners were girl. I said “ Nope u can love who u love”. I turned to her and told her she fu**ed up our live but she not theirs. I went no contact after that. It’s been 11 yrs. Best choice ever

To be fair, there IS a moment. But there is always a buildup and long-term reasons for THE moment.

My aunt and uncle put my grandparents in a nursing home and then wouldn't tell me where they were or how they were. Me being a CNA started traveling to different nursing homes to work in hopes I could find them and then 6 months later I found out through the grapevine they had passed a couple weeks back..... my grandparents and I were very close

She said no to coming wedding dress shopping with me, 2 hours away where we grew up, her reason? Because she was moving to Florida in 4 MONTHS

I realized I got an anxiety attack every time I got a call or a text message from my mum, and I had been putting up with it to avoid hurting her, completely disregarding my own mental health

A followup question: did you grieve this loss (and how did that play out)?

When she started talking about my daughter the way she’d always talked about me. I never stood up for myself — but no one talks to or about my kid that way.

My mom got married when I was 12 and got pregnant with a baby boy. When he was born in 2001 she told me that she finally has what always wanted and I don’t fit in her life anymore. I was 16 to that time. Now I’m 40. no contact for 24 years.

I’m no contact with both my mom and dad, my final straw hands down was when they died.

When my mom passed. I told my dad( theyve been divorced for 18 years but each others first loves) and all he said was ‘ okay and? What do you want me to do then?’ My bad looking for empathy. When his mom died i told him that same line. He didnt like it.

My family pretended my mom’s dysfunction was normal. Told be the bigger person because she’s your mom. No. There was a lot of damage done, no thanks.

Estelle Beck MD|Complex Trauma :
For me, the final straw was realizing that nothing I did would ever be enough.
My husband and I financially supported my mother and her business for years. I even bought her a house in Italy to retire in because it had always been her dream and she couldn’t realize it herself. I was exhausted after caring for a sick family member and working and decided to put myself first and set a boundary—that I wanted to spend Christmas alone with my husband after seeing everyone beforehand—she told me I was just like my father, that she needed space from me and could only love me from a distance, but was happy to stay in contact with my husband.
That was the moment it clicked: no amount of money, time, love, or sacrifice would ever earn unconditional love. The goalposts would always move.
I went no contact after that. It was one of the most painful decisions I’ve ever made, but at that point it was a no-brainer. It has also been one of the most healing decisions of my life. Ten months later, I have more peace than I ever thought was possible. 🌸

The final straw was realising they were never going to see my worth or value outside of what benefited them. It genuinely felt like they didn’t think I deserved to be treated with respect or regard. Which made me believe that about myself as well. I deserved better and always have. Them not seeing my worth is a shortcoming on their part. Not mine.

When my therapist said aren’t you tired of being an emotional piñata for your family? Their presence was so draining that I literally felt exhausted after minimal interaction and would literally need to have a drink or two just to sit through a family function. The peace that came from waking away from them was hard but so worth it.
