Josef Schütz, a 101-year-old former SS guard, was convicted for his role in the deaths of 3,518 prisoners at Sachsenhausen concentration camp between 1942 and 1945. The historic case made international headlines because Schütz became the oldest person ever convicted for Nazi war crimes. Prosecutors presented wartime records identifying him as a Waffen-SS guard stationed at the camp near Berlin, where tens of thousands of prisoners died through executions, starvation, disease, forced labor, and systematic killings carried out under the Nazi regime. Although Schütz repeatedly denied working at the camp, the court concluded that his presence as an armed guard directly contributed to the functioning of the mass killing system. Survivor testimonies were also presented during the trial, serving as painful reminders of the atrocities committed inside Sachsenhausen during the Holocaust. The court sentenced him to five years in prison. However, because he remained free while appealing the conviction, he never served the sentence before dying in April 2023 at the age of 102.
